「悩める人々への銘」

  I asked God for strength, that I might achieve
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey...
大きなことを成し遂げるために　強さを与えてほしいと神に求めたのに　

謙遜を学ぶように　弱さを授かった

I asked for health, that I might do greater things
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things...
偉大なことができるようにと　健康を求めたのに

よりよきことをするようにと　病気を賜った
I asked for riches, that I might be happy
I was given poverty, that I might be wise...
幸せになろうとして　富を求めたのに
賢明であるようにと　貧困を授かった
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God...
世の人々の称賛を得ようとして　力と成功を求めたのに
得意にならないようにと　失敗を授かった
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things...
人生を楽しむために　あらゆるものを求めたのに
あらゆるものをいつくしむために　人生を授かった
I got nothing that I asked for―but everything I had hoped for
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am among all men, most richly blessed!
求めたものは一つとして与えられなかったが

この詩は、ニューヨーク大学の壁に掲げられていて、１４０年前 にアメリカの南北戦争に従軍した南軍の兵士が記したものと言われています。１０月７日の礼拝で、市原牧師が紹介してくださいました。
